Johann Theodor de Bry's Neiw Kunstliches Alphabet
(1595)
In the late 19th century, Carl Hrachowina (1845-1896) taught
at the Arts and Crafts School in Vienna. Among his students
were Franz von Matsch and Gustav Klimt (whose portrait of
Adele Bloch-Bauer fetched the highest known price for a
painting in June 2006). He selected and published a series
of study aids.
Bygone era
His course materials for artists and craftmen provide a
foundation of baroque ornament. They reflect three centuries
of an unbroken tradition in decorative arts.
