C alligraphy and lettering in the Latin alphabet are well established among the applied arts. They are supported by a large number of enthusiasts. Many professionals do commercial work of excellent skill and taste.
So far, most efforts to include calligraphy among the fine arts have relied on proof by assertion. (“Of COURSE it’s art!”) This has not changed the market. Few collectors pay attention to lettering.
Until this changes, which would be nice, we can take delight in book jackets and greeting cards, posters and packaging. Daring brushwork and tastful penmanship still have their place.
