Pen heights

Pen strokes are sometimes used to measure letters. In La Operina they are about four strokes high, ascenders and descenders excluded. That makes them a little bolder than the average italic.

Pen width

“Plain Text”takes >>> care of it

C ounting pen widths can be useful. Give it a try. At the outset, it helps getting the feel for a broad edge pen.

At the outset, counting pen widths can help. Thin writing spans many pen-strokes. Bold writing is only a few strokes high. Here’s an example.

Pen height

The letter a on the left is six pen widths high. The strokes are thin. The middle letter is four pen withs high, and bolder than average. The very bold letter on the right is two pen withs high. All three were of course written with the same pen.

Let’s look at this from the other side.

Pen height

Here all the letters are the same size. Six pen widths make a thin letter. Four make a semibold. Two pen widths make an ultrabold letter.
