Arrighi says you cannot join some lower-case letters to the letter that follows. Here are details. (See the book, pages 15 and 16.)


You shouldn’t join from descenders: not from the letters g j q x y z and the long s.


Neither should you join from finishing strokes that turn to the left, such as the letters b p h z. (If you finish the letter h with an exit stroke, as you do the letter n, join from it by all means.)


And Arrighi says you shouldn't join from the letters e o r. People do that every day with no ill effects.

Don’t worry. If it looks right, use it. Arrighi put it this way. “But to join or not to join I leave to you, as long as the writing is even.”
