A wordspace should be the width of the letter n. Write an imaginary letter n instead of a wordspace. You won’t need a bigger gap than that, and can probably manage with less. (See the book, page 19.)

The distance between joined letters should be the same as between the stems of the letter n.

If you have to choose between what measures up and what looks right, Arrighi says you should trust your eyes. That's good advice.
