This is Arrighi's pen. (You'll find this illustration on the ninth page of his book Il modo de temperare le Penne.) He cut it from a feather.

A quill is one of the loveliest writing instruments I can imagine. It is sensitive to light touch. It makes hairlines as sharp as a razor. It's also a pain in the neck. It can run out of ink in a single stroke. It doesn't keep an edge for long.
    Italic is one of the great writing styles in the history of the Western world. Arrighi's Operina teaches the formal kind, and the man knew what he was doing.
