This is a spread from Gutenberg’s bible (circa 1450). It is a milestone and a masterpiece, the first book in the West that was printed with movable type.
Each page has two columns. They are narrow, about six words to a line. This makes them as easy to read as a magazine.

Be careful when you choose your line length (or column measure, if you like). If you change it later, you may have to redo other things, such as the hyphenation.
Most people are used to reading newspaper columns of about forty characters. They tend to have trouble with more than sixty characters to a line.
