Main stem
The thicker stroke in a letter showing contrasts, or the dominant or downstroke of others; also known as body mark.

As main stem.


Majuscules
The bibliographical name for capitals (qv).


Mean line
same as midline.


Medium
A weight of type face normally between light and bold.


Middle serif
That on the apex of some design of the letter w.


Minuscules
The bibliographical name for small letters, ie lower-case (qv).


Modern
A type design characterized by appreciable contrast between thick and thin strokes, upright modelling, and fine, sharp-pointed serifs which join the stem with slicght bracketing.


Monoline
See monotone.


Monotone
Charactgeristic of types showing visual evenness of stroke; also known as monoline.





Midline
An imaginary line at the top of lower case letters without ascenders.

Narrow
Descriptive of a typeface less than standard (eg the lowercase alphabet of which measures less than 13 ems of its own body).
